How to Determine the Energy Requirement of your Workshop Devices
If you plan on buying a generator to have a back up power supply for your shop, you have to learn the actual energy requirement of your equipment. This information is also helpful if youre planning to improve your electrical panels. You can also use this information to compute the electrical expense that you incur in your workshop.
The most important value in the computation of energy requirement is the wattage. Wattage is the product of multiplying the value ot amps by the value of volts. To explain further, volts is the pressure of electricity flowing though a conductor and amperage is the flow of electricity coming from the electric service provider.
If you want to find out what are the value of wattage, volts and amps of your equipment, you must find the plate or tag attached to it. On this tag are the values of wattage, amps or volts used by this device. The tag or the plate is usually placed at the back or at the bottom of the equipment.
If you can not find the tag or the plate, you can use the owners manual to acquire this data. If you have lost your manual, your next option is to surf the net for the information about your device. Find the official website of your devices manufacturer. There, you can inquire about its volts, amps and wattage.
If the wattage is not yet included in the information you have gathered, you can compute for the wattage by multiplying the volts by the amps. Usually the volts will either be 120V or 240V.
When you are computing for the total power demand of your workplace you dont need to assume that you are going to use all your equipment simultaneously. What you need to do is to estimate the amount of energy you need to supply a few electronic devices that can be operated at the same time.
When you choose equipments as basis for the energy requirement, use the devices which use the most energy. This way you will never risk getting a system overload. After you chosen the devices to use compute for the wattage add the lighting energy lighting consumption, and multiply the value by 1.25. This will give a more accurate result for the energy requirement of your shop.
Now you know how to compute your energy requirement using volts, amps and wattage. Use this knowledge to avoid circuit overloads and to minimize power consumption in the future.
