Shuffleboard Newbie Introduction
All you will need to play the game is a shuffleboard table and eight weights which are equally divided in 2 colors. Each player gets 4 weights of the same color. The objective of the game is to shoot or land his weight as close as he can to the edge of the table.
The Basic Gameplay
It is customary to flip a coin in order to determine who which of the 2 players goes first. The first player should shoot his first weight and try to land it as near to the edge of the table as he possibly can. He should be careful though not to overshoot the weight as it might fall over the table. The second player should then try to land his weight closer to the edge than the weight of the first player. In doing so, the second player may also bump or knock off the first player’s weight out of the board. The two players take successive turns until they run out of weights. The player who has the last shot (and that is the one who lost in the coin toss) usually has greater advantage since he will have the opportunity to knock off the first player’s weight in order to win. This last shot is called the hammer shot. Shuffleboard is perhaps the only game where not being the first player is a huge advantage.
How to Tally the Score
There are three scoring zones or areas in a shuffleboard table. These zones are divided by lines. The scoring area nearest to the player has a score of 1. The further the scoring area is, the higher the score goes which means that the zone which is nearest to the edge of the table has a score of 3. There are instances, however, when a weight lands exactly on the edge of a shuffleboard so that part of it is actually outside the table. When this happens, the weight is given a score of 4 as long as it does not fall off. Only the player whose weight lands nearest to the edge of the shuffleboard table gets to count the scores of all of his weights which landed further than the weights of the other player. The other player does not get points for any of his weights.
How To Win in Shuffleboard
After the round, the players should continue playing until one of them reaches a score of 15. In every round, the order of play should alternate so that the player who went first in the previous round should go second in the next one. The first player who gets 15 points wins the game.
