Solving for the Values of Amperage and Wattage through a Meter

Ohm’s law can be explained by a formula which states that amperage– or the amount of current is equal voltage– or the electrical force divided by ohms– or the resistance in the circuit. This formula states that the relationship between the electrical current and the pressure of electricity is direct and the relationship of the resistance of the circuit to the electric current is indirect.

By applying this concept, we can now use a meter to calculate amperage and wattage that is used up by the equipment. For this goal we will use a multimeter to gauge the resistance and voltage levels of a device which is relevant data in computing the amperage and wattage of an appliance.

You should turn off the power supply in the device’s circuit first. Then you will use the multimeter. Set your multimeter to the resistance setting. The Greek letter of omega is the symbol used for this setting.

What you need to do next is to put the tip of the multimeter’s positive probe to the equipment’s terminal and then put the multimeter’s negative probe on the other terminal. You will see that the multimeter will have a reading. The value of the reading is the resistance of the current expressed in ohms.

Next step is to change the multimeters setting to the voltage setting. Afterwards you have to figure out what is the power source of the device. If it is powered by solar cell, dynamo, battery, solar panel, or transformer, you have to set the voltage to DC or direct current. If the device is powered by an electrical outlet or three phase generator, you have to set the voltage to AC or alternating current.

The next thing you need to do is to turn on the power source of the equipment. Then you have to place the mulitimeter’s positive probe to the positive terminal of the power supply. Afterwards, you have to place the negative probe of the multimeter to the negative terminal of the power supply. The multimeter will then have a reading, the value of the reading is the electrical pressure in terms of volts.

We will now apply ohm’s formula on the data we have measured. We will divide the value of the voltage by the value of the resistance and we will get the amperage. The amperage is the value of the energy consumed by the device.

To compute for the value of the wattage, we will just multiply the amount of the amperage to the value of the voltage. The resulting product of these values is the wattage which is the energy requirement of the device. That is how we compute for the values of amperage and wattage by using a meter. You can now use this information for future reference.
