The Entertaining Movie Holy Rollers Is Based On A True Story
Holy Rollers is a movie about the classic struggle of a young man to find his own path in life, which is based on true events of the late ’90s in America but has totally fictional characters. It was introduced at the Sundance Film Festival at the beginning of 2010 and is now in theaters; it will be released on DVD in October.
The hero is Sam Gold, a young Hasidic Jew growing up in Brooklyn and being trained as a rabbi. His father hopes to arrange a good match for him, one that will raise him above the poverty his family has known. As the boy grows older, he shows an aptitude for business which his family firmly discourages.
As Sam begins to show signs of resenting living up to his family’s expectations, he is approached by the older brother of his bast friend, who persuades both innocents to take an exciting trip overseas to bring back ‘medicine’ to those denied it in the US. The boys soon have their first encounter with the nightclub scene in Amsterdam.
With his equally innocent friend, Sam unwittingly becomes a mule, for the medicine is actually the illegal street drug ecstasy. Once he realizes what is going on, he faces the choice of returning to his restricted and impoverished life of religious study or go willingly into the world of criminal drug dealers.
Sam is seduced by money and excitement to continue walking on the dark side, where his business instincts are recognized and appreciated. He is soon deep in a double life and gradually loses his faith, his family, and his community. He also begins to experiment with the drugs he is smuggling and falls in love with the beautiful but doomed girlfriend of the drug lord he works for.
Things are further complicated by Sam’s infatuation with the dealer’s girl friend, who he would like to save from her own addiction. As he learns that the relationships in his new life are either hopeless or dangerous, he begins to look for God in the middle ground between the unrealistic expectations of his youth and the wasteland of his present.
The decisions the maturing youth must make, and the dangers he faces as he does so, are the climax of this emotional thriller. It is rated R and has received both good and bad reviews in almost equal number; more of those who have seen it give it a thumbs up than the number of those who do not recommend it.
The title is ironic. The original holy rollers were pentecostal Christians who found ecstasy in worship. The Hasidic Jews of the 1990s, who made perfect mules because they seemed to be above suspicion, were bringing in a drug that supposedly allowed people find the same euphoria in a chemical.
Holy Rollers the movie stars Jesse Eisenberg as the troubled young Jew learning to make his own choices and control his own future.
